Wrong water

The readings came back green before anyone got in. Not algae green. The kind of green that holds light after you take the lamp away. The team went down anyway, because that is what the funding was for.

Masks on

Below a hundred metres the goggles stopped being safety equipment and started being identity. Twenty-five variants came out of that pressure, and no two divers agreed on which one to wear.

Bubbles up

Every exhale went up lit. You could track a diver by the glow of what they breathed out. Eighty-eight hair variants surfaced in that stretch — the water was rewriting people faster than the log could record.

Ten thousand records, five layers, one hundred seventy-six distinct values. Three thousand and thirty-seven came back wearing an earring nobody handed them. This site is the log. Nothing here is invented.
